March into Spring!

What’s on the Schedule?

Our winter trips brought women together to try new things, build confidence, and explore new outdoor spaces—and now we’re ready to trade layers for sunshine and waterfalls. Spring is officially calling.

This month, a group of eight Nomad ladies is heading to Mammoth Cave National Park. We’re especially excited to be returning for the first time in three years, ready to explore one of the most unique parks in the country.

In April, six Nomads will board the iconic California Zephyr train from Chicago to Grand Junction, Colorado. From there, we’ll spend three days and two nights backpacking through Colorado National Monument, keeping our eyes peeled for bighorn sheep, mule deer, jackrabbits, foxes, and an incredible variety of birds—red rock canyons included.

May brings one of our all-time favorites: Savage Gulf. Twelve women will set out on this unforgettable adventure, sleeping under the stars with sweeping views across the gulf and spending their days wandering trails and chasing waterfalls.

Also in May we have a brand new excursion to Hoosier National Forest, where participants will plan their own meals in small groups, and learn navigation, map reading, route planning, knot tying, and partner up to lead the group for one day. This is our only trip that isn’t currently sold out, check it out on the website if you’re interested!

Have you heard about House Joint Resolution 140? Here’s what you can do to help it from destroying public lands and waters near you:

The Boundary Waters in Northern Minnesota are part of an enormous watershed that have been protected by congress as far back at 1926, when the area was designated as part of the Superior National Forest. Since then, protections were strengthened in 1964, when the Boundary Waters became a designated Wilderness Area, and again in 1978 when the wilderness area was expanded, motorized use was banned, and mining was restricted. This protection has proven environmental success, and economic success; visitors to the Boundary Waters spend over $50 million in nearby communities each summer, and outdoor recreation in Northern Minnesota accounts for tens of thousands of jobs.

In 2023 the Biden Administration expanded protections by placing a 20 year withdrawal on mining public lands upstream from the Boundary Waters, since we know that Sulfide-Ore Copper Mining upstream from this region will pollute these waters that support backpacking, canoeing, fishing, hunting, and hiking.

The Congressional Review Act, or CRA, allows congress to review federal laws that passed within the last 60 days, overturn them with a simple majority, and then send the resolution to the President for a final signature. During this process, debate is limited, the resolution cannot be filibustered, and the agency is barred from introducing “substantially similar” rules in the future.

House Joint Resolution 140 uses the CRA to overturn the 20 year mining withdrawal near the Boundary Waters rule from 2023. This is an unprecedented use of the CRA, and would not benefit Americans. The proposed open pit mines in the area are owned by a major Chilean mining conglomerate, and will pollute the Boundary Waters FOREVER.

HJ Res 140 has already passed the House of Representatives, and the Senate will be voting on it any day now.

Here’s what you can do:
CALL YOUR SENATORS- if you have never called your senators before, it’s easier than you think. Senators are public servants that are elected to represent YOU. Each state has two senators, and you can search the public phone numbers for their local office and their DC office. Sometimes an intern will answer the phone to take a message, and sometimes you’ll get their voicemail. All you need to do is introduce yourself as a constituent from your zip code, and urge your senator to vote NO on HJ Res 140. You can give reasons why, and you can ask for a call back or email response.
You can also talk to your friends and neighbors about the Resolution, find out if they have heard of it, or if they support it. Post information about it on your social media, and post the names and phone numbers of your Senators.

Nomad of the Month

This month, we’re excited to highlight Melissa, who has been an integral part of The Nomadology community since 2022. Melissa is the kind of woman who challenges herself to grow while lifting up everyone around her along the way. She shows up as a team player- working hard, laughing often, and always ready to lend a hand when it’s needed. Those qualities make someone you’re lucky to have on any backpacking trip. We had the chance to interview her this month- here’s what she had to say.

What is your relationship like with the outdoors?
I have been drawn to the woods for as long as I can remember. In one of the houses I grew up in during my middle school years, my backyard was the woods. I spent so much time wandering back there, alone in my thoughts with feelings of peace. I crave being in the woods and near the water. It gives me a feeling of peace and a sense of awe. I am amazed at all of nature’s beauty - the animals and bugs, the sky, the sunshine, the foliage, the patterns in the bark, the random pop of color in the midst of all the green or brown - It’s all amazing to me! The ability to temporarily disconnect from stress and all responsibilities is what the outdoor space gives me that no other space provides.

Has anyone ever given you advice that truly stuck with you or changed the way you live?
“Don’t forget to look up”. I am not sure who I heard this from, but that phrase always pops in my head at the right moment… Sometimes hiking is so hard and if I start to struggle, I find I am usually staring at the ground and easily losing sight as to what brought me there to begin with. When this happens, I think – “Don’t forget to look up”. This helps me to stop and take a moment to look up and all around and appreciate all the beautiful surroundings.

What’s one outdoor experience or adventure that stands out as especially meaningful to you?
Thanks to Nomadology, I was able to visit Isle Royale in 2023. I heard about Isle Royale in my early 20s when a dad was telling me about his visit with his young son and I had been intrigued by the Island ever since. This is one of the most meaningful adventures to date for a few reasons – I’d wanted to visit for years, the length of the trip (6 days, 5 nights) was my longest trip yet, which meant more time to disconnect from real life stressors, at times the terrain was very hard to navigate so there was a huge sense of accomplishment, and we saw moose! I think I was in a permanent state of awe my entire time at Isle Royale. Also, not specific to the Island, but specific to Nomadology is the lifelong friendships created on each trip, that is truly a priceless bonus!
For anyone nervous about signing up for the first time, I’d say - GIRL - DO IT! I understand all the feelings of hesitation. I say this with confidence – even if you know no one, if this is an interest of yours – DO IT! Chances are you won’t be the only one who signs up alone, you will feel comfortable in no time, and you will end the trip with lifelong friendships who you will most likely be on future trips together.
